the upeprscores are an unfortunate side effect of moving the english text into the japanese game.
the text parser doesn't handle it right so fixing that takes some additional poking around.

Why do that? Was a ton of stuff censored in the NTSC-U release?

not as far as i know.
the text is just formatted a little differently
it's some form of wide-ASCII(?) / utf-16 formatted script.

im not really sure what the guys over at atlus did it since the script files are not respecting the font properly.
the thing that makes the difference is implemented in the main executable of the game, so it sorta looks like they just hacked the jpn version to work instead of producing properly formatted script files...

it's an ass to edit anyway since it's written in unicode so all the letters are 2-bytes wide instead of normal 1-byte.

i.e. it looks like this in hex editor:

T.h.i.s. .h.e.r.e. .i.s. .t.e.x.t. .t.h.a.t. .i.s. .f.o.r.m.a.t.t.e.d. .l.i.k.e. .c.r.a.p.

japanese letters are always 2-bytes wide so it works fine on the japanese version, however there's no real need
to make it like that on an english game.

the usa version of catherine has tons of data left from the japanese version anyway.
the menu graphic files and whatnot still have their options written in japanese etc...

about time someone does it really.

that crap was always fixable, but i guess the guys who worked on the Undub back when the game reseased never fixed it.

There was all those versions around that based on the jp version, lol.

Maybe i'll finally get arsed to play it :P
though it works fairly well as a movie when you put all the FMV's and cutscenes together :P

Some of the stray announcer sound effects are still in english unless they were in english in the jp version. But other than that it's great.

I figured as much, the announcer in english seemed to fit either way so I left it alone.
